Fossil reveals evidence of 200-million-year-old 'squid' attack Posted: 06 May 2020 10:36 AM PDT Researchers say a fossil found on the Jurassic coast of southern England in the 19th century demonstrates the world's oldest known example of a squid-like creature attacking its prey. |
Bat 'super immunity' may explain how bats carry coronaviruses, study finds Posted: 06 May 2020 10:36 AM PDT Researchers have uncovered how bats can carry the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) coronavirus without getting sick -- research that could shed light on how coronaviruses make the jump to humans and other animals. |
The movie 'Jurassic Park' got it wrong: Raptors don't hunt in packs Posted: 06 May 2020 09:37 AM PDT A new analysis of raptor teeth shows that raptorial dinosaurs likely did not hunt in big, coordinated packs like dogs. Though widely accepted, evidence for this behavior is relatively weak. Recently, scientists have proposed a different model for behavior in raptors that is thought to be more like Komodo dragons, in which individuals may attack the same animal but cooperation is limited. |
Sustainable recovery of nutrients from urine Posted: 06 May 2020 09:37 AM PDT Most ammonia capture is done through the Haber-Bosch (HB) process, an energy-intensive technique used to produce fertilizer that accounts for 1-2% of the world's annual energy consumption. Engineers report they have recovered ammonia through a new method with a very low level of energy, approx 1/5 of the energy used by HB. And because the technique recycles ammonia in a closed loop, the ammonia can be recaptured for reuse in fertilizer, household cleaners, etc. |
One small area of ocean not changed by global warming Posted: 06 May 2020 09:37 AM PDT Global warming has affected the entire planet's surface, except for one particular area of the ocean, which has bucked the trend. A research team has unraveled the causes of this conundrum. |
Fiber optics capture seismic signatures of the rose parade Posted: 06 May 2020 09:37 AM PDT Interesting signatures of the Rose Parade were captured by fiber optic telecommunications cable lying below the parade route. Researchers describe how they converted these dark or 'unused' fibers within cables into a dense seismic array. |
ESO instrument finds closest black hole to Earth Posted: 06 May 2020 06:15 AM PDT Astronomers have discovered a black hole lying just 1,000 light-years from Earth. The black hole is closer to our solar system than any other found to date and forms part of a triple system that can be seen with the naked eye. |
Robot vacuum cleaner conveys seven dwarf personalities by movement alone Posted: 04 May 2020 12:02 PM PDT Researchers used a vacuum cleaner and the personalities of three of the Seven Dwarfs from Snow White to demonstrate that people can correctly infer a robot's personality solely by how it moves. |
