The feeling a limb doesn't belong is linked to lack of brain structure and connection Posted: 07 May 2020 10:13 AM PDT People with body integrity dysphoria (BID) often feel as though one of their healthy limbs isn't meant to be a part of their bodies. They may act as though the limb is missing or even seek its amputation 'to feel complete.' Now, researchers have found that these feelings that a limb doesn't belong are mirrored in the brains of people with this condition. |
Beer was here! A new microstructural marker for malting in the archaeological record Posted: 07 May 2020 10:12 AM PDT A new method for reliably identifying the presence of beer or other malted foodstuffs in archaeological finds is described in a new study. |
A billion years missing from geologic record: Where it may have gone Posted: 07 May 2020 10:07 AM PDT The geologic record is exactly that: a record. The strata of rock tell scientists about past environments, much like pages in an encyclopedia. Except this reference book has more pages missing than it has remaining. So geologists are tasked not only with understanding what is there, but also with figuring out what's not, and where it went. |
Surfaces that grip like gecko feet could be easily mass-produced Posted: 07 May 2020 06:47 AM PDT The science behind sticky gecko's feet lets gecko adhesion materials pick up about anything. But cost-effective mass production of the materials was out of reach until now. A new method of making them could usher the spread of gecko-inspired grabbers to assembly lines and homes. |
Cold air with water vapor rises: What that means for earth's climate Posted: 06 May 2020 01:21 PM PDT In the tropical atmosphere, cold air rises due to an overlooked effect -- the lightness of water vapor. This effect helps to stabilize tropical climates, and the impacts of a warming climate would be much worse without it. |
Otters juggle stones when hungry Posted: 05 May 2020 04:05 PM PDT Hunger is likely to be the main driver of stone juggling in otters, new research has shown. |
